PKC Region 3, Making a Difference!
Competitors, Black Belts, Instructors, and Parents:
I am writing to inform you that we will be postponing the 2019 Ohio PKC State Champions Banquet due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease). As of this time we do not have a date that we are postponing this event to. In the interest of our competitors and their families we will wait to announce a new date for the banquet until bans are lifted and life resumes to a more normal state.
Yesterday afternoon Gov. Mike DeWine asked Dr. Acton of the Ohio Department of Health to sign a Public Health Order closing all restaurants and bars (except for carry out food) in the interest of public safety. “The more we can keep people in their homes, the more we can stop people from congregating, the better off we are,” DeWine said. “We are taking these steps to save lives.”
Early this past weekend, we devised a method to divide the banquet into two groups and comply with the 100-person congregation limit to present the Ohio PKC State Champion Awards. We followed all necessary elements such as social distancing, limiting the number of people in a room, and others that the CDC and government mandated in order to ensure the safety of everyone. With the most recent action of the Governor, it is now apparent that cannot be accomplished.
Like the March Madness National Karate Championships, which has now been tentatively rescheduled, the 2019 Ohio PKC State Champions Banquet will be rescheduled as well. We are actively working to find dates. In the best interest of our competitors and their families, we will refrain from rescheduling the banquet at this time. We will wait until a time that it is safe. For now, please realize the banquet will happen, we just do not know when.
Some updates to the competition schedule due to this pandemic have unfolded in the past 24 hours that we want to make you all aware of. The Portage Open, originally scheduled for 4/18 will be postponed as will the Millennium Invitational which was originally scheduled on 5/3. MARCH MADNESS TOURNAMENT UPDATE
Competitors, Black Belts, Instructors, and Parents:
I am writing to inform you that we will be postponing the March Madness National Karate Championships, due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease). The tentative date that we have is July 11, 2020. In the weeks preceding, we had meetings to discuss possible ways to keep the competitors, judges, coordinators, and spectators safe at our event. We even began making adjustments in order to prepare our event, such as securing two gymnasiums to keep the number of people in a gymnasium as low as possible. As the event became closer, we proposed a method of time scheduled rings based off of the number of pre-registered competitors in order to keep the number of people in the two gymnasiums as low as possible.
With the updated guidelines that have been put into act by the Governor of Ohio, we have lost our original location for the event (a public K-12 school). Since then, further bans have been put into place limiting the number of people that are allowed to be at sporting events and gatherings. With the number of competitors that we have, we would be in violation of these bans even with the extra efforts that we have made. We know that this pandemic has spread to many areas where we have many competitors, spectators, judges, and coordinators that have registered with us for our event (MN, WI, IL, IN, OH, PA, NY, KY, WV) including one case locally. With the current bans enacted by the Governor of Ohio on the amount of people that are allowed to be at a gathering, we have been left no choice but to postpone our event.
We are working feverishly to get more information for everyone. We will be in high level meetings later today and tomorrow, regarding the state of the PKC as well as Region 3. We are also currently working on possible plans for the Ohio PKC State Champions Banquet. I know that you have many questions, many of which we are diligently working on answers. Please allow us some time to make these tough decisions. As soon as we have more information, we will share it via mass email, Facebook, and relevant websites. Please be aware that the COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease) has presented an extremely fluid situation, which changes daily. Thank you for your patience and your continued support!
